Sovereign: a self-hosted media server for the movies and TV series you own

Sovereign: Home

Sovereign is a self-hosted media server that streams the movies and TV series you already own to a browser, a Roku or an Android device.

Features

HLS Streaming

Video is delivered as HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), which the web app plays in any modern browser with nothing to install.

OAuth 2.0 / OpenID Connect

Standard OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect sign-in, with sessions that renew themselves, TVs that sign in with a short code, and optional Google or Microsoft sign-in.

Protected Media Links

Links to videos, images and subtitles are handed out only to signed-in users, each works for one file, and each expires within about a day.

Seek Previews

Scrub the timeline and a thumbnail shows where you'll land. Chapters split the timeline where the file has them.

HDR to SDR

HDR titles are converted for screens that can't show HDR, on the GPU wherever it can do the conversion.

Apps for TVs and Phones

Besides the web app, there's a Roku channel and Android apps for phones, Android TV and Google TV, and Fire TV. TVs sign in with a short code you approve from your phone.

Radarr & Sonarr Integration

Sovereign monitors your Radarr and Sonarr instances and imports new movies and TV series within about 15 minutes of them being added.

On-Demand Transcoding

A file the device can play is repackaged without re-encoding. Anything else is transcoded by FFmpeg in real time, on the GPU when there is one.

Subtitle Tracks

Embedded text subtitles play as native HLS tracks, and image-based Blu-ray subtitles are drawn over the picture by every client.

Pick Up Where You Left Off

Stop halfway through on the TV and finish on your phone. Progress, watched state and favorites follow your account.

Up Next

When an episode ends, the next one starts after a short countdown, and the card can appear over the end credits.

Plain Folders Too

No Radarr or Sonarr? Point Sovereign at a folder of films or series and it reads the names, looks each title up, and imports it.

Rich Metadata

Movie metadata comes from TMDb and TV series metadata from TheTVDB, or from TMDb for a directory you import directly, with posters, backdrops and episode details.

Multi-User Access

Give everyone their own account, with per-user watch progress, favorites, and playback history kept separate.

Favorites

Mark movies and series as favorites for quick access to the titles you return to most.

Admin & Analytics

An administration area with library analytics, active streams, jobs and activity logs.

Docker-First Deployment

Distributed as a Docker image. A single compose.yaml runs the server, which serves the web app itself and keeps its embedded database on a volume.

Email Alerts

Point Sovereign at an SMTP server and it tells administrators when something needs attention, with a daily digest.

Quality Limits

Set how good a transcode looks and how much bandwidth it may use, and let each user turn their own streams down.
